About

Dr. Ryan P. McMahan is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Central Florida (UCF), where he directs the eXtended Reality & Training (XRT) Lab. Prior to joining UCF in 2019, he was an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), where he directed the Future Immersive Virtual Environments (FIVE) Lab. Dr. McMahan is a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award winner and has been awarded over $1M in research funding. He co-authored the 3D User Interfaces: Theory and Practice, Second Edition book, and his research is highly cited. Dr. McMahan is the Associate Program Director for the Mixed Reality Engineering (MRE) program at UCF, for which he teaches CAP 5115 Virtual Reality Engineering, CAP 6110 Augmented Reality Engineering, and CAP 6117 Mixed Reality Project. He has been recognized with an Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award and was the sole recipient of the UTD Provost’s Award for Faculty Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentoring in 2016. Dr. McMahan provides professional service for numerous research communities, including serving as an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Human-Computer Studies (IJHCS), and he regularly provides university service. Dr. McMahan received his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Applications from Virginia Tech in 2011.
